Ethiopia's Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba has requested that the World Bank increase its support to the country's health sector.
During a meeting with the newly appointed World Bank Country Director, Miriam Salim, the minister emphasized the need for continued collaboration on key health issues.
Dr. Mekdes highlighted the World Bank's unwavering support during the COVID-19 pandemic and periods of conflict. The partnership between the Ministry of Health and the World Bank has significantly accelerated the health sector agenda, she noted.
The minister expressed readiness to expedite ongoing health projects, including large-scale initiatives implemented in collaboration with the World Bank FBC reported.
Dr. Mekdes particularly requested that the World Bank strengthen its support for Ethiopia in preventing non-communicable diseases. Additionally, both parties agreed to work closely together to control malaria outbreaks.
Miriam Salim commended the Ministry of Health for its achievements, especially in improving maternal and child health. She emphasized that Ethiopia has become a model for other East African countries in the health sector.
