UK Doubles Down on Ethiopia Partnership

In a bold move to solidify its relationship with Ethiopia, the UK is ramping up its commitment to social development and economic empowerment, focusing heavily on women's rights and gender equality.

The British Ambassador to Ethiopia, Darren Welch, held high level talks with Ethiopia's Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Ergoge Tesfaye (PhD) signaling a renewed push for collaborative efforts on critical issues facing the nation.

The discussions, described as "fruitful," centered on deepening cooperation in key areas such as social protection and inclusion, women's contribution to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, women's economic empowerment, and the eradication of female genital mutilation and gender based violence.

Minister Ergoge highlighted the broad scope of her ministry's responsibilities, encompassing the well being of women, children, youth, the disabled, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups.

She expressed deep gratitude for the UK government and embassy's ongoing support for social protection, gender equality, and the empowerment of marginalized communities.

"We deeply appreciate the United Kingdom's dedication to supporting these vital initiatives," Minister Ergoge stated. However, she also underscored the persistent challenges of limited awareness, information gaps, and resource constraints that hinder progress towards true gender equality.

"Addressing these challenges collaboratively is paramount to achieving our shared goals," she emphasized.

Ambassador Welch, acknowledged the Ministry's extensive and impactful work, reaffirming the UK's commitment to strengthening their partnership.

"The UK is eager to deepen our collaboration with Ethiopia, not only in the areas we discussed but also in other spheres where we can jointly contribute to a more just and equitable society," he said.

This renewed commitment from the UK signals a significant boost for Ethiopia's ongoing efforts to uplift its most vulnerable populations and pave the way for a more prosperous and inclusive future.

The expanded partnership promises tangible advancements in social protection, gender equality, and the overall empowerment of Ethiopian citizens.
