The National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has announced that operating drones or other flying objects in and around Addis Ababa without prior authorization is prohibited.
This restriction is being implemented to ensure the safety and security of leaders, critical infrastructure, and national events, particularly in light of the upcoming African Union summit.
The NISS, mandated by Decree No. 1276/2014, stated that it has deployed advanced technology and personnel to counter potential threats posed by drones and similar devices.
Effective implementation of this measure requires public awareness and strong stakeholder cooperation.
The agency emphasized the importance of heightened vigilance during the AU summit and stressed that no drone activity will be permitted in the Addis Ababa area without explicit permission from the NISS.
Individuals or organizations requiring drone use for legitimate purposes must submit a request to the NISS in advance, detailing the purpose of the flight, the intended location, and the drone's make and model.
The NISS also confirmed that Addis Ababa and its surrounding areas are equipped with anti-drone technology, enabling them to detect, intercept, and land unauthorized drones. Operators of such drones will be held accountable and potentially face legal action.
