Ethiopia's Energy Authority Approves Guidelines for Electric Vehicle Charging Systems

The Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority has announced the approval of guidelines regulating electric vehicle charging systems. These guidelines establish a legal framework for controlling the technical aspects of charging systems for both residential and commercial use, as well as the associated payment systems.

The guidelines encompass key aspects including licensing requirements, technical standards, necessary safety measures, and electricity pricing. They also outline the rights and responsibilities of charging infrastructure providers, users, electricity suppliers, and vehicle owners.

The guidelines are structured into three sections: residential charging systems, public charging stations, and systems installed in various commercial establishments. They apply to both grid-connected and off-grid power sources.

Licensing is required for public and commercial charging stations, but not for residential systems. Before connecting to the grid, all charging systems must meet national grid codes and the technical and safety standards outlined in the guidelines.

Regarding electricity tariffs, institutions that have obtained power supply and sales licenses from the Authority must submit their tariff proposals for approval before implementation.

The guidelines also specify infrastructure placement requirements: charging stations should be established every 50 kilometers along highways on both sides of the road, and at least one station every 120 kilometers for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks.
