Three major telecommunication companies—Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel—have joined forces to launch Horizon Fiber, a groundbreaking initiative to expand digital connectivity across Africa and connect the Horn of Africa to Europe and Asia.
The strategic partnership marks a transformative step in reshaping both international and regional digital infrastructure focusing on development of multi- terabit, redundant, terrestrial fiber optic link that will facilitate faster more reliable and robust connectivity, contributing to Africa's digital transformation.
The Horizon Fiber initiative, however reimagines connectivity by establishing a terrestrial fiber network spanning Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan. This terrestrial line is expected to present several key advantages such as cost efficiency, ease of maintenance and regional collaboration.
Speaking on the occasion CEO of Ethio-Telecom Firehiwot Tamiru reiterated that the initiative aligns with digital transformation of Africa strategy 2030 showcasing the commitment for the development and digital advancement of the continent.
Djiboutian Telecom Deputy CEO, Kasim Mohammed for his part disclosed that witnessing regional integration is much appreciated, adding that it will create a room for telecom operators to work beyond borders.
This partnership is said to exemplify unwavering commitment of these three telecom operators bridging the digital divide and accelerating Africa's digital transformation through high-speed secure, and scalable connectivity. The Horizon Fiber initiative positions Africa as a key player in the digital ecosystem.
