Nordic Countries Unite to Transform Ethiopia’s Waste Management System

Nordic embassies in Ethiopia, in collaboration with Reach for Change Ethiopia   and other key partners, have hosted a dialogue on innovative waste management solutions under then theme "Partnering for Change: Nordic Ethiopian Dialogue on Innovative Solutions to Waste Management”.

The event brought together experts and leaders from the Ethiopian government, the Nordic diplomatic community, NGO, private sector, students, youth representatives and local innovators to explore scalable and sustainable waste management solutions for Ethiopia.

The workshop highlighted the potential for Ethiopian-Nordic partnerships to inspire local, effective waste management solutions that can also contribute to job creation and economic resilience.

The Nordic Ambassadors approached by EBC emphasized their commitment to increasing support for local entrepreneurs and the Ethiopian government in advancing waste management initiatives. 

“Nordic countries have made significant strides in developing waste management systems that benefit the communities and the environment”, said Hans Henric Lundquits Swedish Ambassador to Ethiopia.

Ambassador-Designate of Denmark to Ethiopia highlighted the strong cooperation between Nordic countries and Ethiopia, emphasizing shared priorities and values, with Denmark specifically supporting Ethiopia's climate change initiatives.

Norwegian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Stian Christensen, emphasized Norway's long-standing relationship with Ethiopia and noted that his country advocates for climate financing to support Ethiopia’s efforts in building a climate-resilient green economy. 

“We should not waste energy and materials. We have to change them to good products and create jobs for the youth.” Said Sinikka Antila Finnish Ambassador to Ethiopia adding her country is cooperating with Ethiopia in many sectors.

Sofia Breitholtz, CEO of Reach for Change, highlighted the organization's support for local social entrepreneurs driving innovative waste recycling solutions that contribute to the circular economy.

Reach for Change Country Director, Mekdim Gulilat, stressed "by promoting social entrepreneurs it is possible to turn waste to business and create jobs." 

Reach for Change Ethiopia, with IKEA Foundation, is supporting over 40 local enterprises and 10 pilot projects for a cleaner, healthier environment, said the Country Manager.

Dr. Eshetu Lemma, Director General of Addis Ababa Cleansing Agency, highlighted the city's efforts to modernize waste management through Nordic collaboration for a cleaner, greener city.

Social entrepreneurs supported by Reach for Change have showcased a range of innovative products made from recycled waste.
