Expert in Water Resources Dispels Unfounded Concerns About GERD.

In its May 14, 2024 edition, Egypt Independent highlighted insights from Professor Sharaky of Cairo University, emphasizing the seismic vulnerability of the African region. Sharaky underscored the importance of recognizing the heightened seismic activity in East Africa and the necessity for adequate preparations in infrastructure projects.

Recent discussions have questioned the safety of the Renaissance Dam following a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in southern Ethiopia, sparking concerns among some Egyptians despite the geographical distance from the dam. However, a water resource expert provided valuable context, explaining that the energy released by such earthquakes is minimal compared to catastrophic events like the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Moreover, the expert pointed out that even more powerful earthquakes, like the 7.5 magnitude quake in Turkey, have caused no structural damage to dams in closer proximity.

This underscores a crucial principle of seismic science: the energy of earthquakes diminishes significantly with distance. Therefore, the engineering of the Renaissance Dam is well-equipped to withstand seismic activities typical of the region. The expert urged for a focus on scientifically-grounded information rather than sensationalism, emphasizing the need for accurate discussions regarding critical infrastructure projects.

Regarding the GERD, the expert highlighted its extensive international oversight, as outlined in the tripartite agreement among Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan. The involvement of experts from 17 countries ensures transparency and public scrutiny regarding the dam's safety measures. This reinforces the notion that the GERD is not merely a unilateral project but a collaborative effort subject to rigorous evaluation and oversight.
