Zambian experts, Mwaka Chikoye and Musonda Malupenga, have emphasized the crucial role of the BRICS mechanism for emerging economies, particularly as the 2024 summit takes place in Kazan, Russia, from Tuesday to Thursday.
Chikoye, a researcher and prominent figure in the International Relations Association of Zambia, highlighted that BRICS is especially beneficial for nations with shared goals, particularly in the face of increasing trade protectionism. He stated that the BRICS cooperation framework is essential for fostering unity among emerging countries, enabling them to effectively advocate for their common interests.
Chikoye pointed to the significant progress made since the establishment of the New Development Bank in 2015, noting that the numerous projects initiated under its auspices reflect the bloc's dedication to sustainable development. He further articulated that the rising influence of the Global South is pivotal in shaping the globalization narrative, showcasing their vital role as key contributors to the global market, particularly in infrastructure development and enhancing the welfare of their populations.
Chikoye asserted that BRICS champions fairness, promoting the notion that every nation, irrespective of its size or economic standing, can play a meaningful role in the global economy. He underscored the necessity of a multilateral framework that guarantees an equitable distribution of power and resources, viewing BRICS as a complementary entity within the global landscape, collaborating with other international organizations to advance economic growth and development.
