Screenplay to Immortalize Sidama Queen Fura in the Works

The story of Queen Fura, a legendary figure from the Habela clan of Sidama, is being brought to life in a screenplay, according to Tefera Ledamo, director of the Culture, History, and Heritage Directorate in the Sidama region. Born with what was described as uncanny wisdom, even in her childhood, Queen Fura's early life was steeped in whispers among elders who believed she was blessed by the spirits of the land, destined to unite her people.

"She was a storm cloaked in grace," recounts Ledamo with reverence. Driven by a deep disillusionment with the greed and division fostered by the rulers of her time, the young Fura displayed remarkable boldness. Even while herding goats, she would listen intently to the elders' debates under the shade of ancient trees, often interjecting with profound questions like, "Why do we quarrel over water when it flows for all?"

By her early twenties, Fura had effectively dismantled existing hierarchies, replacing them with a system of collective governance. Her wisdom allowed her to skillfully mediate conflicts, drawing upon the rich oral histories passed down through generations by her parents. She forged unity among rival clans through strategic marriage alliances and the establishment of shared rituals.

Despite her significant contributions, Queen Fura's legacy has been largely overlooked by mainstream history books, often relegated to a mere footnote. Now, the Sidama Regional Culture, Tourism, and Sport Bureau is actively working to resurrect her memory and ensure her story reaches a wider audience.

As part of these efforts, a documentary is currently in production to further promote the remarkable life and achievements of Queen Fura, creating suitable platforms for her legacy to be rediscovered and to inspire today's generation.
