Ethiopia’s long-overlooked tourism sector is experiencing a dramatic revival, thanks to the sweeping government reforms and ‘Gebeta Le’hager’ or Dine For Nation initiative, says tourism state minister Sileshi Girma.
The sector has been spotted as one of the five key economic pillars, introducing platforms for the untapped sector to contribute to the ongoing progress the country is experiencing, the state minister told EBC exclusively.
He highlighted policy shifts, strong political commitment, and private sector engagement, which he says have transformed the industry—making Ethiopia an emerging hotspot for global travelers and tour operators.
“The recent reforms have activated Ethiopia’s long-sidelined tourism sector,” Sileshi stated. “By recognizing tourism as a strategic economic driver, we have mobilized policy support, infrastructure development, and skilled workforce initiatives to elevate our global competitiveness.”
The government’s renewed focus has already yielded impressive results. In just the past six months, Ethiopia has hosted over 40 major international events, including conferences, cultural festivals, Sileshi further explained.
These gatherings have not only boosted the country’s visibility but also injected much-needed revenue into local businesses, according the state minister.
Improved infrastructure—such as upgraded airports, roads, and hospitality facilities—has made travel smoother, while new marketing campaigns showcase Ethiopia’s rich heritage, from the ancient existing tourism destinations to newly developed attraction sites.
“We are not just attracting tourists; we are creating unforgettable experiences,” Sileshi emphasized. “Ethiopia’s unique historical, cultural, and natural attractions are now being presented in ways that rival top global destinations.”
The recent surge in international events signals growing confidence in the country’s potential, and officials are optimistic that visitor numbers will continue climbing.
As Sileshi concluded, “This is just the beginning. Ethiopia’s tourism renaissance is underway, and the world is taking notice.”
