February 28, 1975, marked a significant day in Ethiopia-European Economic Community (EEC) relations. On this day, they co-signed the landmark Lomé Convention, establishing the foundation for a vibrant and enduring partnership. Even before this formal agreement, the presence of 21 EU member states in Addis Ababa underscored that historical ties stretched back considerably further.

Collectively known as "Team EU," the EU and its member states have become a strong and collaborative partner to Ethiopia, providing approximately €1 billion annually in multifaceted support.

In a media briefing today, European Union Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sofie From-Emmesberger, emphasized Ethiopia's continued importance as one of the EU's key partners on the African continent. She highlighted the EU's active support for the African Union-led and Ethiopian-owned peace process. Ambassador From-Emmesberger noted the EU's swift provision of funding for crucial initiatives, including disarmament, transitional justice, and the national dialogue.

The Ambassador further outlined key areas of EU engagement, including cooperation in renewable energy—supporting Ethiopia's homegrown Green Legacy initiative—digitalization, and agriculture. She emphasized that these collaborations are designed to bolster the Ethiopian government's ambitious reform agenda, for which the EU expresses strong support for its success.

Beyond political and economic cooperation, Ambassador Sofie stressed that the future of Ethiopia-EU relations is deeply rooted in people-to-people connections. Cultural and educational exchanges, she noted, have played a vital role in nurturing these multifaceted relationships.

Referencing Ethiopia's history as a co-founder of the United Nations, Ambassador From-Emmesberger asserted that the EU regards Ethiopia as an invaluable partner in championing and promoting multilateralism and a rules-based international order.

Deputy Director General for Europe and America at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Abraham Mengistu, acknowledged Ethiopia's longstanding diplomatic relations with the EU. Reflecting on the 50th anniversary of these ties, he stated that valuable lessons could be gleaned from both achievements and challenges to forge even stronger partnerships in the future.

Ambassador Abraham expressed Ethiopia's gratitude for the EU's generous support and the enduring, fruitful diplomatic relationship. He conveyed Ethiopia's desire to attract increased foreign investment, highlighting the favorable conditions established by the government.

Regarding regional peace and stability, Ambassador Abraham affirmed Ethiopia's commitment to maintaining peace, emphasizing its undisputable importance. He noted that the national dialogue process is well underway. Furthermore, he underscored Ethiopia's dedication to combating terrorism, piracy, and human and drug trafficking in the region.
