Ethiopian officials are actively discussing a comprehensive draft strategy aimed at modernizing the transport sector through the expansion of electric and renewable energy vehicles. Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime (PhD), emphasized the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during a recent discussion forum, highlighting that transitioning to electric vehicles is essential for preserving the environment in rapidly growing urban areas.
Minister Alemu outlined key steps to achieve this vision, including the expansion of charging infrastructure, improved coordination among institutions, the development of robust legal frameworks, and the establishment of an incentive system to encourage adoption of renewable energy vehicles.
Currently, Ethiopia has successfully integrated approximately 100,000 electric vehicles into its transport network, demonstrating significant progress in this critical area, according to the Minister.
The forum also features contributions from Finance Minister Ahmed Shide and various stakeholders, underscoring a collective commitment to fostering a climate-resilient economy.
As the nation grapples with the challenges of climate change, this initiative represents a pivotal step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for Ethiopia's transport sector and its citizens, the Minister underlined.
