Ethiopia Earns $31.5M from Electricity Exports

The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that it is working to respond to requests from countries seeking to access Ethiopia's electricity. The CEO, Ashebir Balcha (Eng.), stated that various activities are underway regarding power development, accessibility, and regional utilization.

He noted that Sudan, Djibouti, and Kenya are already receiving power from Ethiopia, and that test transmission to Tanzania via a recently completed Ethio-Kenya line has begun. Ethiopia allocates 90% of its generated electricity to domestic consumption and 10% to other countries.

The CEO indicated that efforts to expand power development and access will continue, noting requests from South Sudan and Somalia. These requests are being studied, and responses will be provided once power transmission infrastructure is developed. According to a local media, in the first three months of the current budget year, electricity sales to neighboring countries generated $31.5 million in revenue.
