Forgotten Crisis: Civil war in Sudan

Civil war in Sudan seems forgotten as the war rages on causing many damages. Sudanese civilians suffered between the two big elephants. The war in this country, according to scholars, is not for the best interest of Sudanese rather proxy as many actors involved to loot resources. According to UN’s recent report, close to 11 million Sudanese were displaced and many more were also under starvation. Sudan army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has said “many countries remain silent and turn a blind eye” to crimes allegedly committed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the country.

In his rare interview with Aljazeera, General Abdul Fattah reiterates that “Many countries remain silent and turn a blind eye to the crimes being committed every day.” Indeed he made fact based argument and is also part of the problem, global and regional institutions are doing less to held warring parties accountable. General Abdel Fattah further noted that RSF commits heinous crimes “Every day, the enemies are killing the Sudanese people, plundering their land and raping their wives and daughters …”.

The rhetoric of ‘Silencing the Gun’ in Africa is still far from being implemented as conflict wide spreads in many parts of Africa. Regional blocks can play pivotal role exerting their pressure on actors who let civilians to suffer. The “deafening shout” we observe today from the international community failed to rescue displaced Sudanese from suffering, The issue hasn’t been tabled at global and regional level getting the attention it deserves.

According to UNHCR’s recent report Regional refugees response plan (July 2/2024), close to 26 million Sudanese are experiencing severe food shortage. Though staggering numbers are always there, civilians are still suffering.
