President Tayye Atske-selassie has declared the government's full support to transform Addis Ababa University into a global knowledge hub.
Marking its 74th anniversary, the university has facilitated a gathering of its alumni, providing them with the opportunity to revisit their alma mater, rekindle cherished memories, and actively contribute to the university's ongoing transformation. Numerous alumni have graced the university with their presence, actively participating in the commemorative program.
President Tayye Atske-selassie, addressing the alumni gathering, highlighted the detrimental impact of prioritizing the acquisition of credentials over genuine knowledge, which has resulted in a significant generational knowledge gap. He emphasized the urgent need to bridge this gap and prioritize knowledge-driven endeavors.
Underscoring the university's prominent position within Ethiopia, the President assured the commitment of the government to support the university's transformation into an institution that produces knowledge of national significance.
Professor Birhanu Nega, Chancellor of Addis Ababa University, emphasized the paramount importance of safeguarding academic freedom within universities, enabling them to address national and global challenges through research, innovation, and the development of solutions. He stressed the need for universities to foster a vibrant and engaged community of students and faculty.
He further emphasized the crucial role of alumni in driving the transformation of their respective universities, urging them to actively support and contribute to their alma maters.
Professor Birhanu also unveiled the government's ambitious plan to establish Addis Ababa University as a globally recognized center of knowledge.
Dr. Samuel Kifle, the university's acting president, highlighted Addis Ababa University's significant role in Ethiopia's history, particularly its contributions to revolutions, societal change, youth activism, and the generation of knowledge that benefits the nation.
He emphasized that the current gathering provides a valuable platform for alumni to actively participate in shaping the university's future growth.
Addis Ababa University is currently preparing to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee anniversary in a year's time.
