The world marathon record holder Tigist finished Sunday’s Olympic marathon clocking 2:22:58.
Netherlands’s Sifan Hassan won gold in her first Olympic marathon, while Kenya's Hellen Obiri finished third and won bronze for her country.
Another Ethiopian athlete Amane Beriso, who is world champion, finished the distance fifth.
