The 3rd International "Big Five Construct Ethiopia" Construction Industry Exhibition has officially opened at Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa.
During her address at the event, Minister of Urban and Infrastructure, Chaltu Sani, stated that the construction sector accounts for 20 percent of Ethiopia's total GDP and contributes to the creation of 10 percent of employment opportunities.
The Minister also noted that the construction sector in Ethiopia has seen significant disruption and change over the past years of reform.
It was highlighted at the forum that the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure is actively working to improve the sector's performance and address existing challenges. In this regard, the significant role of sector stakeholders was emphasized, and it was mentioned that the government is working on improving operational regulations.
Starting this year, the Minister announced that successful contractors and consulting firms will undergo evaluation, with results being made public. She added that various incentives will be provided to high-performing entities.
There are also plans to enable at least twenty institutions to participate in the international market through this evaluation process.
Furthermore, it was indicated that the government is developing policies aimed at replacing imported construction products with domestically produced alternatives.
