New Opportunities Empower Ethiopian Youth in Manufacturing

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry is intensifying efforts to empower youth in the manufacturing sector, aiming to significantly enhance production capabilities across the nation.

Minister of Industry Melaku Alebel emphasized this commitment during a recent visit to the Prime Tech Engineering Factory in Burayu town, where he highlighted the transformative potential of advanced technology in manufacturing.

During his tour of the factory on Tuesday, Minister Melaku noted the historical reliance on manual machinery for cutting metals and wood, which was labor-intensive and time-consuming.

In contrast, he praised the factory’s use of state-of-the-art Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, which streamline operations and improve efficiency.

“These modern machines not only simplify the production process but also elevate the quality of our output,” he stated.

The minister underscored the factory's pivotal role in reducing reliance on imports, revealing that an impressive 75 per cent of the manufacturing processes, including design and cutting, are now conducted using local resources and skilled Ethiopian youth.

This shift not only supports national economic growth but also fosters job creation and skill development among young people, according to the minister.

Minister Melaku's visit comes at a crucial time as Ethiopia seeks to bolster its manufacturing sector in line with its broader economic development goals.

Furthering the matter, Melaku stressed that by investing in youth and modernizing production techniques, the government aims to position Ethiopia as a competitive player in regional and global markets.

As part of its strategy, the ministry plans to implement additional support programs tailored for young entrepreneurs and innovators in manufacturing, he indicated.

As to him, these initiatives will provide training, access to technology, and financial resources, ensuring that the next generation is equipped to lead Ethiopia’s industrial revolution.
