Nahom Worku, a fourth-year computer engineering student at York University with roots in Ethiopia, has garnered significant international attention by winning Apple's prestigious Swift Student Challenge. His groundbreaking educational application, Access Ed, designed to empower students in areas with limited or no internet access, led to a personal meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
Nahom's inspiration for Access Ed emerged from a deeply personal place: his own experiences growing up in Ethiopia, where he witnessed the profound educational hurdles posed by inconsistent internet connectivity. Driven by a vision of equitable learning opportunities, he engineered Access Ed to store all learning materials and user data directly on the device. This ingenious design ensures the app remains fully operational even without Wi-Fi or cellular service, directly addressing a critical global challenge.
"Access Ed was born from a desire to see equitable access to educational tools for everyone, regardless of their connectivity," Worku stated, underscoring his commitment to bridging the digital divide for underserved communities worldwide.
The application is packed with advanced features. A personalized onboarding process allows students to input their academic background and interests, enabling Access Ed's machine learning capabilities to recommend tailored courses. A particularly innovative feature lets users simply snap a picture of their handwritten notes, which the app then transforms into digital flashcards, significantly streamlining the study experience.
Nahom's journey to becoming an award-winning developer began during the pandemic, a period when he independently taught himself to code. His burgeoning skills were further refined during a recent iOS developer internship at CIBC, according to Addis Insight.
During his presentation at Apple Park, Nahom was among an exclusive group of students who had the opportunity to speak directly with Tim Cook.
