A devastating maritime tragedy has claimed the lives of 48 Ethiopians, as confirmed by the Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti. On October 1, 2024, a tragic event unfolded involving two overcrowded vessels that were transporting 320 migrants from Yemen to Djibouti.
According to a statement from the embassy, a verification process at the scene confirmed that all the individuals affected by this incident were Ethiopians. The embassy reported that 197 survivors were successfully rescued and taken to the international refugee camp located in Obock.
The embassy expressed profound sadness over the loss of life and mentioned that search operations are ongoing for the 75 individuals still unaccounted for. They called for more robust actions to combat human trafficking, highlighting the necessity of enhanced collaboration among various institutions to tackle this illegal trade.
