Ethiopia Plans to slash Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 68.8% by 2030

Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa (PhD), has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 68.8% by 2030 as part of its climate resilience strategy.

Speaking at the consultative meeting on the private sector's role in climate change and the green development agenda, organized by the ministry, she  emphasized ,Ethiopia has integrated climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies into key sectors, including agriculture, energy, industry, transport, and urban development.

She highlighted that Ethiopia aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Minister Fitsum also underscored the crucial role of private sector participation in advancing green development and addressing climate change.

“There is no segment of society that remains unaffected by climate change, including the private sector. It plays a significant role, both as a contributor to the problem and as a key player in providing solutions,” she stated.

The minister urged the private sector to actively engage in financing and implementing green projects, adopting sustainable business models, and investing in innovative climate solutions.

“The path to a climate-resilient Ethiopia requires strong collaboration between the government, private sector, and development partners. We look forward to building these partnerships to drive sustainable growth,” Fitsum added.

Okechukwu Daniel Ogbonnaya, Ethiopia Country Representative of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), stated that the private sector in Ethiopia can play a transformative role in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and broader sustainable development.

He reaffirmed GGGI is committed to support Ethiopia’s path to build green economy. “As a global framework institute, we are committed to supporting Ethiopia in mobilizing climate finance and engaging the private sector. We provide policy advice, capacity building, and work with the government to create a regulatory environment that attracts private investment in climate-related projects.” he said

For his part, Kenenisa Lemi, Secretary General of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce Sectoral Association, underscored the irreplaceable role of the private sector in combating climate change alongside government efforts.

He also highlighted that the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations is committed to collaborating with various financial institutions to ensure that the private sector actively participates in climate finance initiatives.

The Ministry of Planning and Development has presented research indicating opportunities for the private sector to potentially participate in green development investments, such as agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy.
