BEIC, Government Institutions Jointly Hold Staff Capacity Building on Data Privacy, Protection

The EU funded Business Environment and Investment Climate, including E-government (BEIC) Project has provided a three-day training on Data Privacy and Protection to selected staff members of key government institutions.

Staff members from the National Bank of Ethiopia, Ministry of Revenue and Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration took part in the training program, which took place from May 8 - May 10, 2024.

The training is said to prepare the institutions’ personnel to navigate Ethiopia's data protection and privacy laws, ensuring the secure handling of sensitive financial information, according to a press statement by GIZ Ethiopia.

Recognizing the growing importance of data privacy in today's interconnected world, the training program leveraged the established frameworks of major international laws.

It also emphasized the importance of establishing essential technical and organizational measures as a strong data protection strategy, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of personal data.

Ethiopia's Parliament approved the Personal Data Protection Bill in April 2024.

The bill is a translation of the country’s constitution, which guarantees data privacy and protection as a fundamental right, but with some exceptions outlined in the newly approved proclamation.
