Ethiopia Needs Private Sector Investment to Expand Climate Smart  Urban Development

Ethiopian government is gearing up the momentum to ensure climate smart urban development with engagement of the private sector investment.

Tracing back the nation’s strides in the past, one finds that the general perspective of Ethiopia’s future is founded on the green development strategy.

It is in this framework that Ethiopia’s Minister of Urban and Infrastructure, Chaltu Sani joined the panel discussion at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, the UAE and urged the private sector to invest and ensure climate smart urban development.

She also shared the promising experiences of Ethiopia in tackling the adverse effects of climate change through afforestation and conservation activities. In this regard, the planting of over 30 billion seedlings only in the past few years is worth mentioning.

The minister also underlined information technology-based interventions are in consideration of governments strides as they are critical to bring about sustainable urban development in the country.

“We have the determination to own the transformation of the countries development by fostering renewable sources, implementing smart technologies, conserving natural resources, implementing wise utilization of electric powers and reducing carbon emissions,” Chaltu indicated.

She also revealed government’s commitment to build up the capacity of private sector investors in any possible way to achieve in the set target.

Nemera Gebeyehu (PhD) State Minister of Planning and Development, who joined her at the panel, also reiterated private sector investment is imperative to realize the aspired green development among the nation.

He also said the leadership of the reformist government has shown unwavering commitment to support and engage the private sector investment in a strengthened manner.

Deputy CEO of the Ethiopian Investment Holdings, Meleket Sahelu on his part attested the private sector and government joint initiatives are given due considerations by respective bodies who steer the wheels of the home grown economic reform.
