Ethiopia Achieves Dramatic Drop in Maternal Deaths, Challenges Remain

Ethiopia has achieved remarkable success in reducing its maternal mortality rate over the past two decades, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The country has seen a dramatic decrease from over 400 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births twenty years ago to just 195 per 100,000 today. WHO attributes this substantial decline to Ethiopia's sustained investment in strengthening its health system, training health professionals, and improving service delivery across the nation.

Despite this significant progress, challenges persist. Data indicates that an estimated 8,000 mothers still tragically die each year in Ethiopia from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.

While the Ethiopian government has implemented commendable initiatives, including expanding human resource training and enhancing maternal and child care through various tools, including digital services, WHO emphasizes the critical need for continued focus on improving service accessibility.

According to ENA, expanding health infrastructure and increasing the number of skilled personnel are also highlighted as essential steps to ensure every mother receives the necessary care and to further drive down mortality rates.
