Ethiopia's AI Leap: Mela, Pi, the Call for African Technological Advancement

The Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has built a Human-made Intelligence (AI) system, disclosed Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.)

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the sectors envisioned with a great vision by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.).

Studies indicate that generative AI, one branch within artificial intelligence, if properly utilized in Africa, could increase Africa's GDP by $110 to $220 billion by 2030.

The Prime Minister stated that, unfortunately, Africa's approach in all fields has been one of delay, which is regrettable.

"First we delay, and after it passes, we regret," said the Prime Minister, adding that no part of the continent has been spared this "scar" in the technology sector.

He noted that Africans' culture of rushing and following when something emerges is extremely weak and that excessively admiring others and devaluing one's own is another one of our setbacks.

Currently, Ethiopia has built its own institution in the sector and is working on it. Furthermore, it has been included in the education system, with PhD-level programs being offered at Addis Ababa University.

He also stated that the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has built a human-made intelligence (AI) system called Mela.

When explaining how Mela AI differs from similar AI systems, the Prime Minister said that it allows for extensive use of local languages. He also pointed out that it can hold and deeply organize a large amount of data.

In another matter, he mentioned the existence of a system called Pi, stating that this system has managed to eliminate the process of hiring a large workforce at the government level. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) said that the system's ability to organize data makes its importance significant.
