The United States, Finland, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have strongly endorsed a landmark agreement signed between Ethiopia and Somalia in Ankara on December 11, 2024.
The accord, facilitated by Türkiye, resolves long-standing disputes between the two nations and promises to significantly improve regional stability and cooperation in the Horn of Africa. The agreement reaffirms both countries' sovereignty and focuses on shared security and development priorities.
The United States Department of State welcomed the agreement, highlighting its importance in fostering stability and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
According to Horn Observer, the statement specifically praised Türkiye's role in facilitating the agreement and expressed anticipation for upcoming technical negotiations to ensure Ethiopia's secure and sustainable access to the sea, while respecting Somalia's territorial integrity.
Finland's Special Envoy for Peace Media in the Horn of Africa, Suldaan Said Ahmed, also celebrated the agreement on Twitter, describing it as a testament to mutual respect and commitment to peace. He specifically acknowledged Türkiye's crucial role in mediating the dialogue.
IGAD also celebrated the breakthrough, emphasizing its contribution to regional stability. The agreement includes key provisions addressing Ethiopian participation in the upcoming AU mission in Somalia and Ethiopia's access to the Red Sea.
