Three Contenders Vie For African Union Commission Chair

Three candidates have been nominated for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, including Raila Odinga.

Current African Union Commission Chairperson and former Chadian Prime Minister, Moussa Faki Mahamat, will be completing his two terms and handing over the position to a new leader.

The three candidates vying for the position are Raila Odinga of Kenya, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Djiboutian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Richard Randriamandrato, former Malagasy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

These candidates will participate in a televised debate in Addis Ababa tomorrow, where they will intensely compete to win over voters by detailing their plans if elected.

In the coming February, one of the three will be elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The election of the Chairperson is conducted every four years through a secret ballot, requiring the winner to secure 3/4th of the total votes cast. A candidate needs the support of approximately 36 out of more than 50 heads of state to be nominated.

The elected Chairperson serves a maximum of eight years.
