Afar Region Eyes Tourism Boom with Lake Abyu Development

The Afar Regional government is ramping up efforts to transform Lake Abyu located at the mouth of the Awash River in Afambo Woreda, into a premier tourist destination. This strategic move is part of a broader plan to significantly boost the region's tourism sector in the current Ethiopians budget year.

Mohammed Ali Beido, Head of the Afar Regional Communication Bureau, confirmed that substantial progress has already been made. "We are working collaboratively to promote the region's vast tourism potential through various methods,". He highlighted that since recent reforms, the development of tourist sites has led to a notable increase in both international and domestic visitor numbers.

Lake Abyu is a cornerstone of this initiative. Officials have undertaken numerous projects to enhance its appeal, including the construction of vital infrastructure like an asphalt road leading to the lake. Beyond its scenic beauty, Lake Abyu is also being developed for fish production, indicating a multifaceted approach to maximizing its economic benefits.

"The work to develop the lake will continue to be strengthened," Mohammed affirmed, signaling a sustained commitment to realizing Lake Abyu's full potential as both a tourist magnet and a valuable resource for the local economy, FBC reported.
