Addis Ababa is building a cutting-edge security force to combat crime and bolster citizen safety, officials announced. The ambitious project, revealed during a mid-year budget review, unites the city's peace and security administration with its law enforcement authority in a comprehensive effort to improve security across the capital.
Head of the Addis Ababa City Peace and Security Administration Bureau, Lidiya Girmay stated that the new institution will be a modern security apparatus that safeguards the peace and security of citizens. She emphasized the need for continued collaboration with federal and Addis Ababa police, other security agencies, and broad community engagement to further strengthen the rule of law and citizen safety, ensuring ongoing development projects are not disrupted. She highlighted the success in maintaining peaceful religious celebrations, attributing this to collaborative efforts with various institutions.
The report indicated a significant reduction in crime rates over 48% in the past six months. The Law Enforcement Authority also reported positive results in protecting ongoing development projects like the city's corridor development and other initiatives. Effective work has been done to control illegal land grabbing, illegal construction, and disruptive activities around schools, contributing to a more stable rule of law within the city. The Law Enforcement Authority plans to continue its collaborative work with various institutions to sustain these improvements.
Zerihun Tefera, Chief Executive Officer of the Addis Ababa Law Enforcement Authority, also confirmed the institution's significant reform efforts over the past six months, resulting in the over 48% decrease in crime. According to AMN, the performance review was attended by senior leaders from the Addis Ababa City Peace and Security Administration Bureau and the Law Enforcement Authority, stakeholders, and leaders from across the city's districts and sub-cities.
