Rift Valley Earthquakes Prompt Emergency  Disaster Risk Management Council Meeting

The Disaster Risk Management Council has held an emergency meeting yesterday regarding the earthquake event that occurred in three districts of the Rift Valley in the Oromia and Afar regions.

The emergency meeting was attended by members of the scientific community and the leaders of the two regions.

Present at the event, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh posted on his social media page that the meeting agreed that special attention should be paid to the earthquake and tremor risks that have occurred in areas that are part of the East African Rift Valley since September 2017. 

The meeting reviewed the effectiveness of the pre-disaster prevention activities carried out by the joint task force, believing that due to the frequency and magnitude of the event, appropriate precautions need to be taken due to the impact on citizens living in the area. 

Besides, the emergency meeting reviewed the earthquake events and responses in detail and set direction for the next steps and activities.

The forum also highlighted the close support of partners and relevant sectors to the Disaster Risk Management Commission for the early warning work. 

During the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister thanked all parties involved in the effective early warning work carried out so far.

It was also noted that federal and regional structures are providing a coordinated disaster risk response and that the scientific community is closely monitoring the issue and providing information.
