IMF Praises Ethiopia's Economic Reforms, Pledges Continued Support

A high-level Ethiopian delegation, led by Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, has met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and senior management from the IMF's Africa Department. The delegation included prominent figures like Mamo Mihretu, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, Teklewold Atnafu, Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Dr. Eyob Tekalign, Finance State Minister.

The discussions centered on Ethiopia's ongoing economic reforms and future collaboration with the IMF. Minister Ahmed expressed Ethiopia's deep appreciation for the IMF's continued support, which has been instrumental in advancing the country's reform agenda. He highlighted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's strong political leadership in spearheading the pro-poor macroeconomic reforms, emphasizing the whole-government approach and the active engagement of stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of reforms aimed at modernizing the economy and promoting inclusive growth.

Ms. Georgieva commended Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's leadership for the homegrown reform agenda and the achievements to date, including strong growth and strides made in addressing macroeconomic imbalances and opening up the economy. She underscored that Ethiopia's bold reforms could serve as a model for other countries.

The Managing Director reaffirmed the IMF's continued commitment to supporting Ethiopia's ongoing transformation efforts, including addressing the cost of the adjustments, emphasizing the institution's recognition of the tangible progress made by the Ethiopian government. The meeting concluded with both sides pledging to further strengthen collaboration in areas critical to Ethiopia's long-term development and growth.
