Ethio Telecom Goes Public: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Announces Sale

The decision to sell 10% of Ethio Telecom's shares to Ethiopian citizens marks a pivotal moment, broadening the avenues for ownership in this historic institution, stated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.).

"Today marks a historic milestone as we announce that Ethio Telecom shares are ready for sale," Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) said.

"This good news is also a testament to the successful journey we have been making over the past six years, transitioning from a political revolution to a path of transformation," the Prime Minister said in a message he shared on his social media page.

"The implementation of key transformative initiatives, such as Digital Ethiopia, has paved the way for this historic event and enabled growth in various sectors," he said.

"With 50 million Ethiopians conducting their financial transactions through mobile phones, the 130-year-old Ethio Telecom has offered 10% of its shares for sale to the public," he said.

"This will create a foundation for Ethiopia's stock market and is a significant step that expands ownership opportunities from one of the leading state-owned commercial institutions (now transformed into a shareholding company) in our country, the long-standing Ethio Telecom," he said, adding, "Congratulations to everyone!"
