The collapse of a dam in northeast Nigeria, heavy flooding has killed reportedly at least close to 50 people died and forced 1,000,000 people to flee their homes. Million people has been affected by the flooding in Borno State. According to the state governor, describing the shortfall in rescuing residents and placing them in temporary shelters.
As per reports, the dam overflowed following Heavy rains on Tuesday, disrupting a state-owned zoo and washing crocodiles and snakes into flooded communities. ‘A “stream of people” are currently making their way out of areas covered by the floodwaters, as civilians have been searching in the water with limited diving equipment to save as many people as possible’ Al Jazeera reported.
Authorities are yet expected to announce deaths, as the situation has been described as the worst flooding in the state in two decades by Local officials. Borno State governor Babagana Zulum visited Bakassi camp on Wednesday and said that
“You can see how water completely flooded the area, sewerages were completely flooded, that means waterborne diseases would be transmitted.” floods in Nigeria have reportedly killed 229 people since the start of the year, the National Emergency Management Agency pointed out.
Such flooding resulted from climate change where extreme weather condition is prevalent across the World. Last week Thousands of Sudanese were forced to leave their home due to flood and still are in dire situation.
