Traffic Agency Issues Precaution Alert To Stay Safe This Rainy Season

Addis Ababa Traffic Management Agency urges extra vigilance from drivers and pedestrians as rain increases risks on city roads.

As the rainy season approaches, the Addis Ababa City Traffic Management Agency has issued safety guidance to drivers and pedestrians, emphasizing the need to take proper precautions to prevent traffic accidents caused by weather-related hazards and technical failures.

Inspector Dawit Mulugeta, Public Awareness Officer at the Agency, warned that both drivers and transport users must prepare for unique challenges brought by wet weather. “Rainy conditions can severely reduce visibility and control, especially if vehicles are not properly maintained,” he said in a public statement to EBC Dotstream.

One of the primary concerns highlighted is vehicle preparedness. Drivers, particularly of public and private transport vehicles, are urged to inspect and replace worn or soft tires, which can be especially hazardous on slippery roads. “Neglecting tires in this season puts everyone at risk,” Inspector Dawit cautioned.

Another key recommendation involves daily checks of windshield wipers, which are essential in heavy rain. Malfunctioning wipers can obstruct visibility and lead to serious crashes. The inspector also discouraged public transport drivers from closing vehicle windows, as this traps moisture and fogs up windows, further impairing vision.

The special warning was given concerning behaviour near sensitive areas like schools, religious institutions, and hospitals. Drivers are strongly advised to reduce speed when approaching these locations, with strict adherence to the 30, 40, and 50 km/h speed limits installed throughout the city.

Awareness was not limited to motorists. Pedestrians and transport users were also provided with updated safety advice. When transferring between vehicles or crossing roads during rainy weather, passengers should ensure the road is clear and that approaching vehicles have passed fully before stepping onto the street.

Additionally, Inspector Dawit noted that umbrellas should be held upright in a way that doesn't block the holder’s line of sight. Pedestrians were also warned to avoid listening to music with headphones while walking in the rain, as it distracts from traffic sounds and increases the risk of accidents.

As the rainy season sets in, the Traffic Management Agency's appeal for precautionary action is aimed at reducing road-related injuries and fatalities, often exacerbated by poor visibility, slippery roads, and unmaintained vehicles.

“Preparedness is the most effective defence. Simple daily checks and alertness can make all the difference,” said Inspector Dawit.

The public is urged to take these warnings seriously and to collaborate in ensuring safer roads during the rainy months.
