South Sudan Floods Trigger National Disaster

South Sudan is on the brink of declaring a national disaster as devastating floods have swept through vast regions of the country. Nearly 200,000 individuals have been displaced.

The floods have wreaked havoc on vital infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, according to reports from Anadolu Agency.

The situation has escalated to a critical level, prompting an urgent response from the government. During a significant Cabinet meeting led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Council of Ministers approved the disaster declaration for the areas impacted by the floods.

This formal declaration is expected to be issued shortly, following the Cabinet's unanimous support. Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok, the Deputy Minister of Information, highlighted that since the flooding began in July, over 772,000 people across 38 counties and the Abyei administrative area have been affected, with approximately 198,000 confirmed as displaced.

The floods have severely impacted both human and animal populations, causing extensive damage to essential services in several states.
