A recent archaeological discovery has unearthed the remains and ruins of the Harla civilization, located just outside the bustling city of Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. This revelation sheds light on a previously unknown society that thrived in the region centuries ago. The research, conducted by a team of Ethiopians, British, and Belgian archaeologists, has observed artifacts and structures that point towards a vibrant and cosmopolitan civilization.

The findings include remnants of a 12th-century mosque, Islamic burial grounds, and intriguing glass vessel fragments. Furthermore, unearthed treasures like gemstones, utensils, and silver coins hint at Harla's role as a center for international trade and jewelry making.

This discovery has great potential to transform Dire Dawa into a major tourist destination. The historic city already boasts a rich cultural tapestry albeit the Harla civilization adds another layer of intrigue for visitors. Experts believe that the dig is far from complete, with the potential to uncover even older ruins and artifacts. Speaking to EBC World, Dire Dawa city culture and tourism bureau head Neima Ibrahim said, “as the excavation progresses, we can expect to learn more about the Harla people, their way of life, and their interactions with other cultures in the region".

EBC World witnessed that the discovery of the ruins of Harla civilization opened the eyes and ears of tourists from local and overseas which will make Dire Dawa city the hub of tourist destination sites soon. It is to be recalled that this discovery promises to rewrite the understanding of Ethiopia's past and create a fascinating new chapter in Dire Dawa's story.
