Ethiopia, US Hold Talks on Economic Cooperation

Ethiopia and the US discussed economic cooperation on the sidelines of the ongoing African Development Bank Group (AfDB) Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

Ethiopian delegation led by State Minister for Finance, Semereta is currently participating in the AfDB meeting.

The Ministry of Finance announced Wednesday afternoon that State Minister Semerta held "productive talks" with Deputy Assistant Secretary for Africa at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Eric Meyer, on bilateral economic cooperation.

She also conferred with Steven Collet, the Deputy Director-General of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands on strengthening partnerships in critical areas.

The AfDB annual meeting will see the highly anticipated election of the new AfDB President, on May 29th, 2025. The session is said to be a highly consequential leadership transition process to appoint the next President, who will serve a five-year term.

The incoming President will assume office at a time of unprecedented challenges facing the continent, including rising debt vulnerabilities, climate-related emergencies, declining development assistance, and a volatile global economic landscape.
