Mauritania’s Sidi Ould Tah Elected African Development Bank President

The African Development Bank (AfDB), has elected Mauritania’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, as the President of the Bank, marking a significant leadership transition for the continent’s premier financial institution. The election, held today, saw Dr. Ould Tah secure the top post after garnering support from 81 voters representing both regional and extra-regional members of the AfDB Group.

Dr. Ould Tah will officially assume office in September 2025, embarking on a five-year term.

He will succeed Dr. Akinwumi Adesina of Nigeria, whose tenure is coming to an end after years of notable service and transformative projects across Africa.

The newly elected president brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Director General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa. In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Ould Tah expressed confidence that his extensive background in finance and economic development will enable him to steer the AfDB toward its ambitious goals. He emphasized his commitment to playing a pivotal role in Africa’s transformation journey, particularly as the continent pursues its Agenda 2063 vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

The election was closely contested, with candidates from South Africa, Senegal, Zambia, and Chad also vying for the presidency. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, promptly extended congratulations to Dr. Ould Tah, highlighting the significance of his appointment for Africa’s future.

With his election, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah is poised to lead the African Development Bank into a new era of innovation and impact, reinforcing its mission to drive economic progress and improve lives across the continent.
