The Ethiopian Federal Police Commission has successfully maintained national peace and security through coordinated efforts with other law enforcement agencies, Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael announced Thursday.
In a statement to the media, Commissioner General Demelash highlighted recent achievements, including the prevention of terrorist plots and the apprehension of nearly a thousand suspects.
According to the Commissioner General, the ongoing reform of Ethiopia’s security and safety institutions has empowered the police to fulfil their national mission more effectively. “Our collaboration with the National Defense Force and other security agencies has been instrumental in maintaining peace and security across the country,” he said.
In the past year, police have worked tirelessly to protect over 600 critical institutions and infrastructures, ensuring their safety amidst growing security challenges, according to him.
The Commissioner General emphasized the importance of bravery and vigilance in these efforts, noting that officers are also focusing on strengthening human resources, adopting advanced technology, and enhancing crime prevention and investigation capabilities.
A significant part of the police’s recent success, Demelash explained, involves combating illegal activities such as human trafficking, smuggling, and corruption.
He reported that 972 suspects involved in various criminal activities have been brought to justice, thanks to improved investigative techniques and inter-agency cooperation.
The Commissioner General also detailed the police’s efforts to tackle technology-driven crimes.
Through strategic partnerships with financial institutions and Ethio Telecom, law enforcement was able to arrest more than 80 individuals involved in fraud and cybercrime. “By leveraging technology, we have made significant strides in preventing and controlling digital fraud,” he said.
To further enhance public safety, the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission has launched a new citizen app, enabling community members to submit crime tips directly to authorities.
Demelash believes this initiative will strengthen coordination between the police and the public, fostering a collaborative approach to crime prevention.
As Ethiopia continues to face complex security threats, the Commissioner General reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting national resources, ensuring accountability, and maintaining the rule of law. “Our mission is clear: to safeguard the peace and security of our nation, and we will continue to work relentlessly to achieve this goal,” he concluded.
