Ethiopia Prioritizes Cybersecurity To Safeguard Digital Sovereignty

Cybersecurity is pivotal in safeguarding the country’s digital independence and sovereignty. The remark was made by the Governor of the Ethiopian National Bank, Mamo Mihretu. 

Cybersecurity plays a critical role in protecting Ethiopia’s digital infrastructure and economy. The annual Cyber Security Month, themed "Security of Key Infrastructure for Digital Sovereignty," kicked off today at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa, marking the beginning of a month-long campaign to raise public awareness about cybersecurity.

Governor Mihretu stressed the need for investment in cybersecurity to safeguard digital infrastructure from threats and ensure national security. He highlighted the importance of nurturing young technological talent and encouraging private sector involvement in cybersecurity development.

Director General of Information Network Security Administration (INSA), Tigist Hamid, echoed the importance of cybersecurity, noting that the Digital Ethiopia strategy prioritizes its protection. 

She emphasized the role of Cyber Security Month in raising public awareness and preventing cyberattacks, citing a successful effort to thwart attacks that saved billions of Birr.

The opening ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials including Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla, President of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Abe Sano, and CEO of Ethio Telecom, Frehiwot Tamru.
