Ethiopia Races Against Time to Evacuate Citizens from Lebanon

Ethiopia is making significant efforts to bring its citizens back home from Lebanon, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nebiyat Getachew, the ministry's spokesperson, addressed the media regarding the ongoing situation in Lebanon. In light of recent events, the Ethiopian government has set up a technical committee to evaluate the conditions faced by its citizens in the region. This initiative has already led to the successful repatriation of around 51 vulnerable individuals, with more than 3,000 others expressing their desire to return.

In addition to the evacuation efforts, Nebiyat announced Ethiopia's election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2025-2027 term during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. Out of 193 participating nations, over 171 cast their votes in favor, marking Ethiopia's third term on the council, following previous memberships from 2013-2015 and 2016-2018. This election underscores Ethiopia's dedication to promoting and safeguarding human rights both domestically and internationally. The Ethiopian delegation, led by former Foreign Minister Taye Atske Silassie, participated in various discussions aimed at advancing Ethiopia's national interests and reinforcing its role in the Horn of Africa, while also addressing concerns regarding the situation in Somalia.
