In a medical feat, doctors at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital have successfully separated conjoined twins, marking a significant achievement for the institution. The complex surgical procedure, lasting three and a half hours, concluded successfully a few days ago.
Dr. Abay Gosaye, a pediatric surgery specialist at Tikur Anbessa, shared details of the operation with EBC Dotstream. He confirmed that one of the twins was parasitic, while the main twin is now in good health.
The 6-month-old infants were joined at the abdomen and notably shared a liver. Dr. Abay explained that despite being undeveloped, the parasitic twin possessed its own abdominal cavity and had recognizable organs, including lungs, kidneys, a small heart, and a head.
