Marriott International Expands Presence in Ethiopia, Boosting Tourism and Employment

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) met with Marriott International President and CEO Anthony Capuano to discuss the company's expansion plans in Ethiopia, signaling a significant boost to the country's growing tourism and hospitality sectors.

During the meeting, Capuano outlined Marriott's strategy to add nine new properties across Ethiopia, building on its current portfolio of two hotels with over 400 rooms. This expansion is expected to create hundreds of new jobs and contribute substantially to Ethiopia's economic development.

"Ethiopia stands out as a premier destination with its rich culture, heritage, natural landscapes, diverse travel experiences, and genuine hospitality," Capuano stated. He emphasized Marriott's commitment to supporting local economies and employment opportunities while helping international guests experience Ethiopia's unique offerings.

Marriott's 26-year presence in Ethiopia has been marked by the success of the Sheraton Addis, a Luxury Collection Hotel, and Marriott Executive Apartments in Addis Ababa. The planned new properties will extend Marriott's reach to cities including Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Jimma, and Mekelle.

The company's expansion aligns with Ethiopia's focus on developing its tourism industry, leveraging the country's rich cultural and historical heritage and stunning landscapes. Marriott International, with its global portfolio of 8,785 properties, is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in this growth.

Beyond business expansion, Marriott highlighted its ongoing community support initiatives in Ethiopia. The Sheraton Addis has been providing school supplies to students at Edget Behibret Primary School since 2004 and supports various charitable organizations assisting disadvantaged youth in Addis Ababa.

This meeting between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Marriott's CEO underscores the collaborative efforts between the Ethiopian government and international hospitality brands to enhance the country's tourism infrastructure and economic opportunities.//
