The European Union (EU) disclosed that it has donated ambulances, motorcycles, and other vehicles worth 160 million Birr (approximately USD 2.9 million) to four Ethiopian regions: Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, Somali, and Gambella.
According to the Union, the donation aims to bolster healthcare access in these regions, particularly focusing on improving maternal and child health and supporting gender equality programs.
The handover ceremony was attended by Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba, EU representatives, regional health officials, Ministry of Finance representatives, and other guests.
During the occasion, Dr. Mekdes emphasized the importance of equitable development and highlighted the critical role of this donation in reducing maternal and child mortality rates.
The donated vehicles, comprising 16 ambulances, 30 motorcycles, and nine other vehicles, will significantly enhance the capacity of regional health services to reach remote communities and provide timely medical assistance, according to Minister Mekdes.
Mekdes stated that Ambulances will enable faster and safer transport for critically ill patients, including pregnant women and children requiring emergency care.
Motorcycles will allow healthcare workers to access otherwise inaccessible areas, expanding the reach of essential health services, she accentuated.
According to the Minister, the additional vehicles will support various health programs and logistical operations, strengthening the overall healthcare system in these regions.
During the occasion, the EU also underscored that its focus on these four regions underscores its commitment to supporting equitable development and addressing disparities in access to essential services.
Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, Somali, and Gambella regions often face challenges related to infrastructure, resources, and security, which can hinder access to quality healthcare, the EU indicated.
This targeted donation, according to the EU, aims to bridge the gap and ensure that vulnerable populations in these regions have access to the healthcare services they need.
The emphasis on maternal and child health aligns with global efforts to reduce preventable deaths among mothers and children.
Improved access to transportation and healthcare services will significantly contribute to reducing delays in seeking care, a major factor contributing to maternal and child mortality.
The motorcycles, in particular, will be instrumental in reaching pregnant women in remote areas, enabling timely prenatal care and facilitating access to skilled birth attendants, the EU in Addis Ababa stated.
Furthermore, the EU's support for gender equality programs through this donation recognizes the crucial link between gender equality and health outcomes. By addressing critical social issues that impact women's health, such as access to education, economic empowerment, and gender-based violence, the EU is contributing to a more holistic approach to improving health and well-being in these regions. The vehicles will play a crucial role in supporting outreach programs, facilitating access to services, and promoting gender equality initiatives in the target regions. This comprehensive approach aims to address the underlying social determinants of health and create a more equitable and sustainable healthcare system for all.
