23 Killed, Many Missing in Major Landslide in Cameroon Capital

Long hours of heavy rain Sunday night caused major landslide which killed at least 23 people in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé.

Heavy rainfall forced the Mefou River burst its banks and overwhelmed several neighbourhoods and destroyed parts of them.

The death toll has reached 40, while many more are missing, according to a local radio.  The disaster has destroyed over thirty houses.

The magnitude of the flooding deterred rescue efforts.

Ernest Zebaze, a 24-year-old university student said he identified the bodies of his mother and two siblings. “I am still looking for my father who was in the house during the downpour," Zebaze said.

Latest BBC report indicated that, authorities in neighbouring Nigeria warned Saturday residents to expect floods in nine states as Cameroon began releasing water from its Lagdo Dam.

Last year, the release of water from the dam caused flooding and fatalities in Nigeria, especially in Benue state, on the border with Cameroon.
