By: Kassahun Chanie

In a recent address, Ahmed Shide, the Minister of Finance of Ethiopia, emphasized the significant impact of collaborative efforts on local communities. He stated that by harmonizing customs procedures, reducing transit times, and minimizing trade barriers, the government of Ethiopia aims to create a more efficient, transparent, and business-friendly border environment that will benefit all stakeholders involved.

Minister Ahmed commended the Government of Kenya for its commitment to finance the construction of the Suftu and Rhamu bridges, describing this investment as a testament to a shared vision for improved infrastructure and connectivity. He underscored the necessity for both nations to agree on a framework for collaborative inspection and quality control to ensure that the highest construction standards are maintained, asserting that infrastructure must not only be built but built correctly.

On the topic of digital connectivity, the Minister recognized the significant opportunity presented by the extension of high-capacity fiber optic infrastructure to Ethiopia, which could potentially link to Djibouti. He noted that this digital backbone would enhance trade, improve government services, and facilitate more efficient connections among citizens. In an increasingly digital world, he asserted that this initiative would empower economies and enable a seamless flow of information.

Ahmed reminded attendees that while focusing on technical and policy issues, it is crucial not to overlook the human dimension of this cooperation. He highlighted that the true beneficiaries of these efforts are the communities living along the border, including pastoralists, traders, youth, and families who stand to gain from improved access, opportunities, and services.

The Minister urged that efforts should be inclusive and responsive to the needs of the people, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing youth empowerment and job creation as integral parts of the agenda. He stated that investing in youth equates to investing in the future of both nations.

In conclusion, Minister Ahmed expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its steadfast support and to IGAD for its continued facilitation of regional cooperation. He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s full commitment to its partnership with Kenya, stating that the work undertaken would help shape a more connected, prosperous, and resilient future for both nations and the wider Horn of Africa region.
