Ethiopia Advocates for Multilateralism, Global South at BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Ethiopia is actively participating in the first BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting of 2025, which commenced yesterday in Rio de Janeiro. The high-level gathering, focusing on "The Role of BRICS in Addressing Global and Regional Crises and Advancing Pathways to Peace and Security," provides a platform for member nations to discuss critical international issues.

Ethiopia's delegation is led by Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, who addressed the opening session. In his remarks, Minister Gedion reiterated Ethiopia's strong commitment to multilateralism and the principle of collective security.

A key focus of the Minister's intervention was the urgent need for reform of global governance institutions. He emphasized that such reforms are essential to ensure the equitable representation of developing countries, particularly those in Africa. Minister Gedion underscored that the reform efforts should aim to strengthen multilateralism with the United Nations at its core.

Acknowledging the current landscape of global tensions, Minister Gedion recognized the endeavors of BRICS countries to pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions to crises through dialogue. He stressed the importance of ensuring that these efforts culminate in outcomes that effectively promote the security, economic, and overall interests of nations in the global South.

The Ministerial Meeting is scheduled to continue until April 29, during which the ministers will engage in deliberations on various topics and are expected to adopt a joint ministerial statement.

In parallel to the main sessions, Minister Gedion is also conducting bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other BRICS member states to further strengthen diplomatic ties and discuss matters of mutual interest.
