Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party concluded a key two-day executive committee meeting today, reporting extensive progress across the nation's political, economic, and social sectors.
Following their deliberations in Addis Ababa (April 25-26, 2025), party leaders issued a statement detailing significant advancements. They noted improved security in various areas, an increase in armed groups opting for peace talks, and strengthening government capacity. Diplomatic successes were also highlighted, including resolving a dispute with Somalia and growing international support for Ethiopia's access to a seaport.
Economically, the party reported a strong performance, projecting an 8.4% GDP growth for the current year. Key figures included a 134% rise in government revenue over the past nine months, reduced external debt, and impressive increases in export earnings and foreign exchange reserves. Millions of jobs have been created, and major infrastructure projects like the Grand Renaissance Dam are nearing completion, now standing at 98.66% finished.
Progress in the digital realm is transforming the country, with internet and mobile money use soaring into the tens of millions. Socially, thousands of new schools have been built, and the tourism sector is seeing increased visitor numbers, positioning Ethiopia as a potential leader in Africa.
While celebrating these achievements, the committee also issued a caution. They warned against what they termed a 'Transitional Phase Trap'—a risk where complacency sets in after initial successes in moving away from political transition, potentially stalling progress before a stable system is fully established.
The Prosperity Party stressed that despite the significant gains, challenges remain, including the cost of living and further developing political culture and civil service. The statement urged party members and all citizens to maintain vigilance, overcome obstacles, and continue working diligently to ensure Ethiopia's ongoing journey towards prosperity is realized.
