The "Made in Ethiopia" movement, initiated in 2022 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is significantly reshaping the nation's manufacturing sector, according to recent updates on the initiative.
The movement's primary objective is to invigorate local production, decrease reliance on imports, and generate employment opportunities, with a target set for the year 2032.
Initial impacts of the program highlight notable progress across various indicators. Reports indicate that over 625 industries have been successfully revived under the initiative. Furthermore, the overall production capacity within the sector has seen an increase, rising from 46 percent to 61 percent.
Economically, the movement is credited with saving over $3 billion in foreign exchange by substituting imported goods with locally manufactured alternatives. In terms of exports, the initiative has already recorded $204 million in earnings within a period of just eight months.
Recognizing the crucial need to bridge the gap between workforce skills and industry requirements, an Industrial University Council has been established. This council is tasked with ensuring that educational programs are aligned with the practical needs of the manufacturing sector.
The "Made in Ethiopia" movement continues to be a central pillar of the country's strategy for industrial growth and economic self-reliance, reported Brics Africa Channel.
