By Tigist Sernesa

The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), a pioneer in Ethiopia’s media history,   is vibrantly holding a celebration today, marking a historic launching of a 24-hour ETV Afan Oromo Channel.

The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation was initially established in 1962 with assistance from the British firm Thomson. Regular transmission began on 2nd November 1964. It was established to highlight the then Organization of African Unity- OAU meeting, which took place here in Ethiopia that same year.

Afan Oromo news and program transmission began to air in June 1991. However, after a couple of years of transmission, it was taken off air for about ten years for no apparent known reasons until it was back on air in 2002. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation has been carrying out various extensive content and presentation improvement tasks as part of its institutional reform.

The Corporation has continued to strengthen the content reforms, doing extensive work to increase the channels in different   languages.  As part of the move,  the corporation has prioritized ETV's Afan Oromo channel,  which has been on trial broadcasting for a while now.

Going forward, ETV Afan Oromo channel has officially been launched today October 19, 2024. It will incorporate new contents with catchy and unique creative ways of presentation, with much more commitment and enthusiasm, delivering a 24 hour transmission to you our dear viewers.
